During the past year, our school councillors have been at the forefront of redesigning our library to promote reading for pleasure across the school. They regularly met with Senior Leaders to discuss which books they would like to read and how our library could be organised in a way that makes it accessible and fun for all children. In April 2022, they officially opened our brand new library and since then have continued to meet to further expand the range of books on offer – this also included a new library scanning in system with real library cards after feedback from classes!
In January 2023, after additional successful fund raising, we expanded our range of books further to include more diverse material to ensure our children were given even more opportunities to explore other cultures, read books with a variety of protagonists and understand what is meant by equality, diversity and inclusion.
In order to further thread through a reading for pleasure ethos, we have also changed the way we encourage reading. Every child can now work towards choosing their very own book by working their way through their ‘Reading Pursuits’ gameboard!
