At Oxley we want to provide children with knowledge of key religions but also instil respect for others. Through our key school values of Be Kind and Be Brilliant we want our pupils to champion British values of tolerance, respect and individual liberty. We enable children to develop a sound knowledge of Christianity and other world religions. Children reflect on what it means to have a faith and to develop their own spiritual knowledge and understanding.
RE has an important role in preparing pupils for adult life, employment, and life-long learning, fostering respect for others whose faiths and beliefs may differ from their own. As well as offering opportunities for personal reflection and spiritual development, we will encourage children to develop their sense of identity and belonging as a citizen within their personal communities and more largely in a diverse national and global society. Learning takes place through creativity, drama, debate, visits, handing artefacts, and learning from others.
Parents/carers have the right to withdraw their child from RE. However, we would encourage parents to come and speak with us so we can discuss the government’s educational objectives and the content of our local authority approved RE syllabus.
If a child is withdrawn from RE, schools have a duty to supervise them, though not to provide additional teaching or to incur extra cost; suitable work relating to the child’s religious education should be provided by the parents/carers. Students will usually remain on school premises, unless the child is lawfully receiving religious education elsewhere.
