In the Lions, Quokkas and Foxes’ classes we learn lots and work hard in a variety of exciting projects such as: art projects inspired by Grayson Perry, Banksy and Marina Tabassum – known for designing buildings that use local materials to improve the lives of low-income people in Bangladesh; delve into understanding more about the Rise and Fall of the British Empire and how WW2 affected children in Britain, Germany and Poland; and pit our music knowledge to the test by exploring pitch, pulse and rhythm as well as music technology and turntablism. In science, we will also be adding a few additional projects that focus on sustainability as well as space, forces, material properties and mammal and plant reproduction to name a few.
Within our topics, we learn, discuss and debate a range of subjects and are not afraid of delving into important issues such as migration, human rights and equality- knowing it is important to make sense of the world we live in today. We also read as much as we can and regularly visit the school library, recommend books to one another during our Thursday morning Book Club and give ourselves a wealth of opportunity to use our increasing knowledge within writing opportunities across the curriculum using a novel based approach. This year, we have some brand new books to explore including: Hidden Figures, The Explorer and The Sleeper and the Spindle as well as staff favourites Rose Blanch and Once.
Every year, we also start the autumn term by having enormous fun on our PGL residential! We also visit Warning Zone after Christmas to further understand how we can manage risks and the importance of staying safe – particularly online.
Towards the end of the year, we showcase our entrepreneurial skills by fundraising for our end-of Oxley treat in the form of our Oxley Enterprise extravaganza and if that wasn’t enough, we also do a spot of performing in our end-of-year production!
By working together, and taking responsibility for our learning, we create a two year journey of fun, memories and progress – before some of us take those all-important steps into our secondary education.
