PSHE at Oxley ensures that upon leaving us in Year 6, our pupils are well rounded,
emotionally literate, self-aware and proactive citizens who manage themselves with
autonomy, respect and the confidence to venture into the world around them. PSHE has a
proven impact on life chances and it underpins the importance of our ethos to develop
responsibility.
At Oxley, we follow the Cambridge PSHE scheme and have designed our curriculum based
on careful reflections on our school context and pupil life experiences. For example, as a
predominantly white British school, we have taken careful consideration in ensuring that
themes of community and diversity are prevalent across our curriculum so as to ensure our
pupils leave us with an understanding of what it means to be living in Britain today. Pupil
questionnaires are also in place to ensure that our curriculum is bespoke for the needs of
our children. Oxley’s PSHE and RSE curriculum enables children to develop a wide range of
views, beliefs and tolerance of others. We have regular timetabled lessons and
opportunities for discussion are built into the school day to enhance understanding. British
Values underpin a great deal of our school life with democracy in choosing house captains,
rewards and a thriving student council just some examples of how Oxley children are given a
voice that is celebrated and heard.
Through our whole school approach in using the Zones of Regulation, we give our children
the time and space to explore, discuss and manage their emotions. Our aim is to create an
emotionally literate school where children can explore, express and develop themselves
into young people who know themselves and are ready to venture into secondary education
and beyond. We also have worked alongside MHFA England and have a Youth Mental
Health First Aider in school, this has also earned the school a Healthy Schools+ award from
Leicestershire County Council. Alongside this, we are working to renew our Healthy Schools
accreditation.
