In the Lions, Quokkas, and Foxes’ classes, we dive into a treasure trove of exciting projects while putting in hard work to learn and grow! This term, we’re getting creative with art, drawing inspiration from brilliant artists such as Lubaina Himid, Claire Harrup, George Cruikshank, and Pablo Picasso. Exploring their techniques and styles, we’ll not only enhance our artistic skills but gain an appreciation for diverse perspectives in art.
Our history lessons take us back to the fascinating world of the Shang Dynasty in China, where we’ll uncover its significance in marking the beginning of recorded history. Although no parchment or papyrus writings survive, the oracle bones—inscribed animal bones and tortoise or turtle shells—offer us a remarkable glimpse into the life of royalty and nobility, particularly their spiritual belief in ancestral intercession with the gods for good fortune. Delving into this topic will help us understand the roots of civilisation and how it shapes our current world.
In our music sessions, we’ll explore rhythm, pitch, and pulse through engaging group performances. Expect to have a blast creating unique pieces with different timbres and textures, while also learning how to maintain a steady part in performances. We’ll practise reading and playing rhythms using standard notation and mastering graphic scores! Our science lessons will introduce additional projects focusing on sustainability, habitats, electricity, renewable energy, light pollution, and many more intriguing concepts that broaden our understanding of the world around us.
Furthermore, we believe that learning extends beyond textbooks. We engage in stimulating discussions about migration, human rights, and equality, understanding the importance of making sense of the world we live in today. Regular visits to the school library allow us to dive into a variety of genres, and we kick-start each morning with lively Book Club activities. This year, we’re thrilled to explore brand new titles such as The Explorer, A Christmas Carol, Romeo and Juliet, and, of course, everyone’s favourite, Holes.
To add to the excitement, every year, we start the autumn term with heaps of fun during our PGL residential! We also have the fantastic opportunity to participate in collaborative activities with other local schools, which fosters friendships and community spirit.
Towards the end of the year, our Year 6 students will have the chance to showcase their entrepreneurial skills during the Oxley Enterprise extravaganza, where they will fundraise for their end-of-term treat. Additionally, they will take part in our much-anticipated end-of-year production, giving them a chance to shine on stage!
It’s all about teamwork, responsibility, and creating cherished memories while we embark on this two-year journey of fun and personal progress—before we take those significant steps into either Year 6 or secondary education!
