In the Koalas’ Class, we love to learn! We foster a ‘I can’ attitude towards our learning. We place a strong emphasis on Phonics and Reading in both Reception and Year 1. The children take part in daily phonics sessions that are interactive, engaging, and fun. These sessions help to build strong foundations for reading and writing.
Phonics is at the heart of our literacy learning. Through systematic phonics teaching, our children develop the confidence and skills they need to become enthusiastic and capable readers. We also enjoy sharing stories, building vocabulary, and developing early writing skills through purposeful and creative activities.
In Maths, we focus on building strong number sense. Children learn the foundations of place value, as well as addition and subtraction, through practical and hands-on activities. We follow a mastery approach, encouraging deep understanding before moving on. As the children become more confident, we begin to explore reasoning and problem- solving, helping them to apply their learning in new ways. We believe children learn best when they are active participants in their learning journey.
Our days are a balance of adult-led teaching and independent learning time in our well-resourced continuous provision. Whether they choose to learn indoors or outdoors, children can follow their interests, explore, create, and apply their skills across the curriculum.
In the Koalas’ Class, every child is supported, challenged, and celebrated.
We work hard, we have fun—and most of all, we believe in ourselves!
Our themes this year are:
What is it like to be me?
What happens in Autumn?
What makes cold places cold?
What is a castle and what will I find there?
What will I find in the sea?
How have toys changed over time?
