Year 1/2: Turtles

Oxley Primary > Our Curriculum > Year 1/2: Turtles
Autumn 1
Autumn 2
Spring 1
Spring 2

In the Terrific Turtles class, we love to learn. Every week we enjoy learning new skills in a wide variety of subjects across the curriculum and enjoy implementing these skills in fun and engaging activities.

Within our lessons, we enjoy working both as individuals and together, as part of our learning journey. We particularly love reading and enjoy tales, both old and new, with which we can discuss the key themes, characters, and settings. We are looking forward to reading Little Red and the Hungry Lion and, later in the year, creating our own non-chorological reports about whales as part of our non-fiction work. We have lots of exciting and engaging activities planned for the year, which include: drama, art work, learning about different characters and perspectives.

Similarly, in Maths, we are looking forward to developing our budding Mathematicians. We will begin the year by creating a solid foundation of place value before moving on to units, that include: addition and subtraction and fractions. We will use a variety of resources to support our Maths problem solving and encourage children to challenge themselves in a way that showcases their Mathematical skills.

Throughout the year we explore exciting, cross-curricular topics such as, Pompeii and Rome and answer questions, such as ‘What does it take to be a great explorer?’ and ‘How can we protect our oceans?’ We will also be studying our local environment as well as learning about simple printmaking in our Art lessons.  Every year, at Christmas, we also take part in our school’s Key Stage 1 Christmas production where we practise our acting, dancing, and singing skills. All parents are invited to watch their children perform with passion and enthusiasm as a finale to the Autumn term.
