In the Happy Hedgehog class, we love to learn. Every week we enjoy learning new skills in a wide variety of subjects across the curriculum and enjoy implementing these skills in a fun and engaging activities. We have particularly enjoyed learning about plants in our local environment where, after a class visit to Battram Woods, we learned about different types of trees and, in our English lessons, wrote explanations as to how trees grow. We have also supported the Shepshed Rotary Club in planting crocuses on our school grounds as part of their ‘Purple for Polio’ campaign and, as part of our Science lessons, we helped to plant some of the 105 tree saplings donated by the Woodland Trust to help our school become a greener place to enjoy and learn from.
Within our lessons, we enjoy working both as individuals and together, as part of our learning journey. We particularly love reading and enjoy tales, both old and new, with which we can discuss the key themes, characters, and settings. We particularly enjoyed reading the traditional story of Hansel and Gretel and after drama activities, vocabulary work, and learning about different perspectives, we wrote our retelling of Hansel and Gretel from Gretel’s viewpoint.
We also have some super mathematicians in our class and have enjoyed learning from a range of topics including place value, addition, subtraction, and multiplication and division – although our topic on fractions, using Skittles sweeties, was definitely our (most delicious!) favourite.
Every year, at Christmas, we also take part in our school’s Key Stage 1 Christmas production where we practise our acting, dancing, and singing skills. All parents are invited to watch and Mrs. Reeve and Mrs. May never cease to believe how brave and dauntless we are to perform so confidently in front of such a large gathering.
